Aerospace components are most vulnerable to corrosion; even a single rusted screw can lead to serious consequences. VCI anti-corrosion bags are essentially a “refrigerator” for metal components, releasing anti-corrosion molecules that form a protective layer on the surface of parts—a much cleaner solution than applying anti-corrosion oil. Precious items like aircraft engine blades can be placed in the bag and stored in a warehouse for two years without developing rust spots.
These bags are extremely convenient to use—parts require no pre-treatment; simply place them in the bag and seal it. The VCI vapor-phase rust inhibitor inside the bag slowly releases and automatically adheres to metal surfaces, even reaching into threaded gaps. Boeing uses it to store spare landing gear; when the bags are opened, the parts look brand new, eliminating the need for rust removal. Even better, it's environmentally friendly and non-toxic; after unpacking, the parts can be directly installed, unlike oil-based rust inhibitors that require cleaning.
Even SpaceX now uses VCI bags, fully equipping rocket segments during transportation, even in coastal areas with salt fog. However, it is important to choose aviation-specific models, as ordinary industrial-grade rust-preventive particles may affect precision sensors. Some manufacturers have also developed transparent, visible models that allow scanning to check part numbers without opening the bag, making them ideal for aviation material warehouses.
